Musings of a Village Florist March has been a bit of an odd month with the new shop opening over the road. I've had days of panic, days of being upset and days where I've thought I'd just give up. I haven't and that's because I've discovered how much a part of the village I've become over the last 4 1/2 years. I've got to know my customers and they've got to know me. They know I'm scatty. They know I work in chaos with mountains of leaves behind the counter that need to be scaled to reach the sink because I'm too busy to sweep up and empty the bin. They know that I work part time hours so that I can go home to meet my children from school because my family matters to me. Most importantly though, they know that if they buy flowers from me they will always get fresh, quality flowers - I refuse to sell old stock most of the time. What I hadn't realised is that they also care about me. I've found that my customers are also friends. Some have even brought me chocolate to cheer me up when they have come to ask if I'm going to be ok and will the business be ok. The answer is yes I'll be ok and hopefully so will the business. I'm seeing the experience as a challenge to be met head on. I have an excellent background in floristry. I've worked as a florist for 10 years. I trained to a high level at Rodbaston and passed every element of the courses with distinction. I won the award for the best student of my year. I take pride in my work. I only sell good quality flowers and plants. I enjoy what I do and I'm the best florist in Shenstone! So what next? The shop is getting a good spruce up and will get painted later in the year. I've brought in a lovely range of fair trade gifts. I've revamped my website. I've loads of plans and ideas... The first being to introduce a reminder service - send me a list of notable dates and we can remind you of your wife's birthday, Mother's Day, wedding anniversary or any other occasion so that you can order flowers and be the most wonderful person in the world for remembering the special day. So here's the first reminder.... IT'S MOTHER'S DAY ON 3RD APRIL!!! |
